Can you guess the fonts used in these famous logos?
From Comic Sans to Papyrus, we’ve all rolled our eyes at a logo that incorporates an all too familiar font. Well, it looks like even the big brands are happy to use free fonts in their branding – or at least use them as a starting point.
A viral Twitter thread revealed the fonts used by various large companies, from Netflix to Spotify, Nike, Adobe and many more. Reinventing the font name in the style of each respective logo, the images reveal 30 top brands apparently using low-cost fonts. But all may not be as simple as it seems. Indeed, it seems that a remarkable number of brands have created logos based on fonts available right on your phone or laptop. Spotify and TikTok both seem to have gone for Gotham, and the BBC appears to be using Gill Sans (to be fair, the company recently switched to its own policy). At least Google uses its own font, Product Sans.
Of course, there are tweaks here and there, from Netflix’s signature arched text to various weight adjustments. But it appears Twitter users were blown away by the images, shared by digital marketer Emmanuel Lumumba. âReally neat to see how basic sans serif fonts can transform into some of the most recognizable brands on the planet,â comments one user, while another adds: âBBC News and Toy Story using the same font is going to make me feel better. end.”
But not all comparisons seem quite right. In the Instagram example (above), there are some clear differences between letters like “a” and “g” (but again, we’ve all been writing “g” wrong for years). âHave you ever seen a Twitter thread that gives the impression that it was designed to upset you and in particular upset you? Because that thread and its inaccuracies …â complained one user. Yes, typography can be an emotional topic.
While this probably isn’t the most accurate design thread around, it’s still fascinating to see how various famous fonts have clearly influenced some of the world’s most recognizable designs.
