Return to Monkey Island was confirmed for Nintendo Switch during today’s Nintendo Direct Mini, along with a gameplay trailer that showed off plenty of fast-paced action snippets and the game’s new art direction. Return to Monkey Island will be released on Nintendo Switch and PC later this year.

– ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW –

The trailer goes back and forth from moment to moment, with series protagonist Guybrush Threepwood – voiced once again by actor Dominic Armato – seeking the secret of Monkey Island once and for all, but also in a way that doesn’t really spoil the series timeline as this game takes place directly after the second game.

Other series favorites will return including Elaine Marley, LeChuck (of course), Murray the Evil Skill, Carla the Swordmaster and more. Of particular note, Elaine appears to be a playable character, which is a first for the series.

The art style found in the game has been a bone of contention for some fans of the series who would live and die by the sword of pixel art, as this is the game they remember playing in the early 90s. Ron Gilbert is back to direct this game, just like he did the first two, and in May defended the new direction, saying “Returning to Monkey Island may not be the art style you wanted or expected, but that’s the art style I’m looking for.”

New art direction came from Rex Crowle, and it’s clear to see the lineage from his previous games, Tearaway and Knights and Bikes. The game is crisp and hand drawn with a layered look and feel. Of Crowle’s work, Gilbert said, “Rex is an incredible creative force and we have an incredible team of artists, animators, sound designers, programmers and testers who all put their souls into this game and it’s beautiful to see, play and listen to. .”

Personally, I rather like it. Gilbert previously relied on the retro aesthetic of pixel art for Thimbleweed Park, but this game was a deliberate homage to the classic point & click era. Changing things up for this game shows how much they want to not just retread old ground, but push this popular franchise forward once more.

With the advancement of game engines like Unreal Engine 5, video games are blurring the lines between real and CG more than ever. But with the trend towards making everything the best it can be, there has been a growing interest in taking games back to their roots in both graphics and gameplay. Fan-made demakes have been surfacing the internet for a few years now, and they show no signs of slowing down.

RELATED: 10 Best Shooters That Reinvented The Genre

Demakes not only change the aesthetics of a video game, but they can alter the actual gameplay as well. Some demakes even completely change the genre of a game, while keeping the original somewhat intact. These demakes can offer a new perspective on a franchise and also give players a nostalgic trip back to their gaming origins.

ten Go back to the series’ roots with The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

The The Legend of Zelda The series has grown over the years, expanding the setting and bringing constant gameplay innovation. With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Nintendo has created a magnum opus, using the latest technology to provide the best possible experience for fans.

Carrying breath of the wild staples like crafting, cooking, and weapon degradation to a top-down NES-style game would be a nostalgic trip for fans. Learn to see all of these elements rendered in the style of the original Zelda the game would also be a fun way to see how far the series has come.

9 What if Call Of Duty played like DOOM 1993

Call of Duty paved the way as the first shooter franchise since COD 4: Modern Warfare pushed it beyond its competitors. However, Call of Duty owes its success to people like LOSS and Wolfenstein. These games set a high standard and started the ball rolling for the FPS genre of the mid to late 90s.

RELATED: 10 FPS Games Everyone Should Play At Least Once

Sending in progress Call of Duty Returning to the era of 90s shooters would be a nostalgic experience for veterans of the FPS genre. It would also serve as a lesson in the history of FPS games for new generations who have only ever seen the 3D world of shooters. The shooting mechanics would remain the same and the multiplayer action would be fast and frenetic, making the game a little less serious and more fun.

8 Super Smash Bros. Pixel Brawl!

One of the most successful and popular fighting game franchises out there is that of Nintendo. Super Smash Bros. The game has grown to feature dozens and dozens of characters from Nintendo and third-party franchises since its debut on the Nintendo 64.

Whereas Super Smash Bros. is great fun in 3D space, bringing it back to a 32-bit 2D art style would add a new challenge for players. See pixelated renders of all the characters featured in Super Smash Bros Ultimate would also be great, since many characters have only ever been rendered in 3D.

seven Dirt Rally as an old school racer

dirt rally offers players an extremely realistic and challenging driving experience that relies heavily on course knowledge and quick reflexes. Turning this into a Sega Genesis-era racing game would be nostalgic and provide a new challenge for experienced racing fans.

Before technology could catch up, driving games featured a 2D car in the foreground and the road zooming below like a treadmill. Players could only see what was directly in front of the car as there was no draw distance, so a dirt rally demake would really test a player’s ability to react quickly.

6 Horizon Zero Dawn as a top-down RPG

Horizon Zero Dawn offers players a huge open world filled with quests, collectibles, and a wide array of animal-machines to fight with. Although the game is presented beautifully in 4k as a third-person action-adventure game, it would work extremely well as a top-down RP like the original. The Legend of Zelda.

RELATED: 10 Video Game Series With The Deepest Lore

Pixelated renderings of Tallnecks, Thunderjaws, Watchers and all other machine lifeforms roaming through a beautifully degraded environment would add a new dimension to the game. attack these enemies.

5 Until Dawn would make a great FMV game

Playing Until dawn much like playing a movie. With a Hollywood cast faithfully represented in the game, players made choices and directed the action towards many endings. Full-Motion video games, or FMV games, did much the same thing in the 80s and 90s.

These games featured pre-recorded live-action video footage and had players respond to prompts to continue the action. Until dawn is pretty much an FMV game already, but replacing the rendered cutscenes with real live-action actors and giving it a good 1990s screen filter would really bring back the nostalgia.

4 Demon Souls would be even harder

The recent Demon’s Souls remake for the PS5 has given fans and newcomers a taste of just how beautiful and smooth gameplay a FromSoftware game can be. Although the game is notoriously difficult, the crisp, smooth graphics and gameplay make it manageable.

Players love the challenge that Demon’s Souls offers, and returning the game to early 90s graphics would increase that challenge considerably. A much more restricted range of motion would make dodging and parrying more difficult, but also more rewarding. Gothic pixel art renderings of the world and creatures would also add a new flavor to the The souls recipe for success.

The Halo the series thrived with its semi-open world levels and full open world with infinite halo, but the game would also work well as a Metroid-Vania style of play. The Master Chief could still conquer the Covenant, but now he had to do it in two dimensions.

The game would definitely play much like the beginning metroid games on NES and Gameboy systems. The First Couple’s Endgame Epic Driving Sequences Halo titles would be an absolute blast, playing like a sonic the hedgehog level as the player accelerates across the screen.

2 Could the Last of Us have the same emotional impact?

The last of us is one of the best games of the last decade. It featured a post-apocalyptic world full of consequences and an emotional story that took players on a tumultuous journey. The third-person action game would translate well to an isometric style, similar to the original To fall or the Diablo series.

RELATED: 10 Video Game Villains Who Did Nothing Wrong

While cutscenes that carried such emotional weight would lose some detail in a demake, the stellar voice acting would still be able to deliver. While there’s still something lost in visual impact, a 32-bit or even 64-bit demake might find other ways to represent The last of us’s dark and beautiful world.

1 Fallout 76 as an open world isometric online game

Whereas Fallout 76 launched poorly, it has become a great online experience as the developers continue to add content and improve overall gameplay. Bringing the series back to its turn-based isometric roots would be an interesting way to undo Fallout 76.

Basic crafting and building elements would be toned down to be much simpler, and the vibrant, apocalyptic setting of West Virginia would look great in a late ’90s pixelated form. world shared online with other players in this style would be a new experience worth pulling out of a vault.

FPS (first person shooter) titles are among the most popular genres of video games. Video game history is simply littered with them, starting with long-standing heavyweights like Wolfenstein 3D. The genre has evolved over the years, branching out into many interpretations.

However, many old ones still stand the test of time, even decades after their release. These titles also continue to inspire and amaze gamers and game developers today, which is exactly why the “boomer shooter” subgenre has resurfaced. Particularly among the independent scene.

Given how well these FPS games have aged, they are well deserving of the “best of all time” award.

1) DEATH

youtube cover

One of the most important games ever made, ID Software’s DOOM is a name most gamers are familiar with. It’s been ported to countless platforms – including non-gaming electronics by DOOM fanatics.

The classic 1993 sci-fi shooter puts players in the boots of badass Doomguy who is on a rampage, mowing down demons and other baddies. The cathartic gameplay and nostalgic level design ensure it will live on in fans’ hearts for years to come.

2) Quake 3 Arena

youtube cover

The 1998 multiplayer installment of ID Software’s acclaimed Quake series exceeded fan expectations. The arcade, lightning-fast gameplay, masterful level design and pure fun factor lives on.

From the iconic rocket launcher to the classic railgun, guns are fun to use. To say it paved the way for PvP shooters on PC is an understatement. In fact, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that it rivals even modern shooters.

3) Unreal Gold

youtube cover

As ID Software’s Quake flexed its technical muscles in the ’90s, Epic Games’ Unreal series emerged as the newcomer. The first Unreal was also a step up for the FPS genre in the graphics department and boasted of setting up narrative settings.

The fact that it might get a remake in the future should underline its importance. Are you ready to return to Na Pali and face its hostile inhabitants?

4) System Shock 2

youtube cover

The late 90s was a revolutionary time for games. System Shock 2 from irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios is a first-person sci-fi RPG. The game is known for its survival horror elements, highlighted by the antagonistic AI Shodan as players explore the derelict Von Braun spaceship.

With a plethora of immersive simulation mechanics to complement the experience, it’s hailed as one of the best games of all time.

5) Halo: Combat Evolved

Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be included with @XboxGamePass from September 1! Check out Halo CE: Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, and Halo 4 – all updated with improved matchmaking, offline LAN, faster load times, Xbox One X visual improvements, and more. https://t.co/FOXgThA6y3

The first Halo launched in 2001 for the original Xbox console as a launch title for Team Green. The sci-fi FPS game featured the iconic Master Chief as he crash lands on a mysterious planet.

In an effort to protect the AI Cortana from the Covenant, Chief must face a variety of enemies across levels. It’s one of the few games where singleplayer and multiplayer are equally legendary.

These retro-inspired FPS experiences pay homage to their inspirations with plenty of vigor

1) DUSK

THE. WAIT. IS. OVER.DUSK for Nintendo Switch™ is NOW AVAILABLE. https://t.co/dQsfgdrDx0

New Blood Interactive is one of the best indie publishers to watch out for fans of the boomer shooter genre. Directed by David Szymanski, this hardcore FPS first launched in 2018. It not only nails the low-poly, low-textured aesthetic but also the zen combat loop.

As a treasure hunter, the titular city of Dusk must be investigated for reports of demonic happenings. And as with any great game, the solution always comes down to fixing the problem with guns.

2) IN THE MIDDLE OF EVIL

youtube cover

Another New Blood title, Indefatigable’s AMID EVIL promises to take gamers back to the days of fantasy FPS games like Hexen and Heretic. Originally released in early access, it was finally released in 2019.

As a champion, players must face the forces of evil that have corrupted the kingdoms. This translates into the use of various mystical weapons to mow down anything in your path.

3) Engraved

youtube cover

Part immersive simulation and part pure retro-FPS, Slipgate Ironworks’ Graven is another Hexen-inspired title. As an exiled priest, players are sent to a plague-stricken city and must track down the culprits while facing hordes of undead and monsters.

Exploration is the name of the game as secrets lurk around almost every corner, from new weapons to collectibles. The game is still in early access and is slated for a full release later this year.

4) Warlock Project

youtube cover

Buckshot Software turned heads with Project Warlock, a 2018 pixel-art FPS directed by 18-year-old Jakub Cislo. Taking a page from games like DOOM and Blood, it features a wizard who must stop a demonic invasion of Earth.

It retains the classic loop of scouring levels for secrets, fending off tough enemies, and a wide assortment of weapons and magic. However, it adds minor RPG elements to further customize the experience.

5) Unpublish

youtube cover

YCJC Games’ Post Void differs from the others on this list in one key area: it’s a roguelite. As an individual armed with an idol on his left hand and a weapon on his right, the game features tight, procedurally generated levels with aggressive enemies.

Since the key gadget revolves around the idol acting as a timer and the only way to recharge it is to kill the enemy, the gameplay evolves into a satisfying loop of going from one headshot to another. . It’s a speedrunner’s dream and certainly not for the faint of heart.

The official Japanese Xenolame The series’ promotional account has shared new specific gameplay information regarding the upcoming Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

First, Class Mastery is briefly mentioned, allowing players to retain specific arts when moving to new classes. These Arts are called Master Arts, allowing for varied combat arsenals. So if, for example, Noah were to upgrade to the Tactician class and master it, he could use specific arts from it if he reverted to his default swordsman class.

Then, if one uses Master Arts and Arts of the current class they have equipped, they will activate Fusion Arts, which are skills that provide simultaneous effects depending on the combined Arts.

Two new songs were also shared, one being the Keves battle theme. A translated name of the old track will be provided here later today. You can listen to both tracks below:

We will continue to update you on any important events. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 new.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 tells the story of protagonists Noah and Mio caught in a conflict between the nations of Keves and Agnus. 6 characters will be at the heart of the experience, and the broad concept of “life” will be the central theme of the title.

The game’s narrative will tie together elements and plots from the future of the previous two main games, Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The flutes seem to play a vital role in the title’s premise.

Summoning this powerful new form depends on a new Interlink system. If specific conditions are met, characters can combine into this mech, and choosing well when to transform should be key to the toughest battles. Another system revealed is a class change option, allowing players to customize their party builds more than in previous games.

Scanning a photorealistic avatar for virtual reality (VR) once required more than 100 cameras, but now researchers at Meta have revealed it can be done with just an iPhone.

Facebook first announced “Codec Avatars” in 2019, which are a class of learned photorealistic face models that accurately represent a person’s geometry and texture in 3D and therefore virtual reality (VR). Avatars are nearly indistinguishable from video, and the company hopes realistic avatars will be important in the future, especially given its metaverse ambitions.

Meta used a specialized platform to generate the codec avatars called MUGSY, which contained 171 high-resolution cameras, as shown below. But as reported To downloadhe recently made a breakthrough and was able to bypass MUGSY by using analysis from a smartphone with a forward-facing depth sensor, such as an iPhone with FaceID.

To capture the Avatar Codec, the phone must be panned across a neutral face and then back up again while copying a series of 65 facial expressions. Researchers say the scanning process takes an average of three and a half minutes, although users will have to wait six hours for a machine with four high-end GPUs to render the avatar in detail. It is likely that if this product were made available to the general public, it would render on a cloud GPU and not on the user’s device.

A photorealistic avatar prototype can now be generated with a simple iPhone

The iPhone’s scanning system uses the Universal Prior Model (UPM) “hypernet”, a neural network that helps generate the person-specific codec avatar. This UPM hypernet is trained by scanning the faces of 255 different individuals using an advanced capture platform, similar to MUGSY but with 90 cameras.

Other researchers have already demonstrated the generation of avatars from a smartphone scan, but Meta says the quality of its results is state-of-the-art. However, the system is limited to scanning only a person’s head and is unable to interpret glasses or long hair.

Avatars codec still far from its release

Meta avatars currently have a basic cartoon art style, so that kind of high fidelity still seems a long way off. On that note, the Meta avatars featured on products like the Oculus Quest 2 have actually lost realism over time to better adapt to complex environments in apps like Horizon Worlds.

A photorealistic avatar prototype can now be generated with a simple iPhone
Zuckerberg avatar

Last February, Mark Zuckerberg said in an interview with Lex Fridman that in the future, virtual reality users may use an “expressionistic” avatar in casual games and a “realistic” avatar in business meetings.

Facebook declined to say when the codec avatars might be available to general users, but the company is confident it’s getting closer.

When you start 10 Minutes Till Dawn, flanne’s Lovecraftian pixel-art shooter, you’ll only have access to one character. Shana is a great starting character with average stats across the board and will give you a solid base to build on as you adapt to the difficulty level of the game.

Its most notable trait is its unique passive perk, which allows you to reroll your upgrade pool once each time you level up. As a result, she’s by far the most flexible character in the game. While she can take advantage of any upgrade that suits you, not all options are created equal – and you’ll be grateful to have the extra chance to roll up your favorites.

8 Vitality: take your health to the next level

A good rule of thumb is if you see Vitality early in the game, take it. This rare upgrade will provide a permanent extra heart without any conditions, increasing Shana’s total health to four solid hearts. With any hit taking a full heart and very few healing options, the extra bit of defense will go a long way towards ensuring your survival.

While you can upgrade Vitality further, trading your movement speed for even more hearts and even a very slow passive regeneration, the base upgrade is perfectly suited to provide a foundation for your build.

seven Fast hands: keep your reloads going

Quick Hands is a useful upgrade that will allow you to live out your gunslinger fantasy with a steady increase in your reload speed. Although reload speeds vary between the four weapons within 10 minutes until dawn, the option of a faster reload is always welcome.

Not only will this reduce the dwell time between your shots, making it harder for enemies to get close to you, but it will also make it easier to use certain skills that trigger on every reload. A great option to try is Fan Fire, which will spray bullets around you in a circle each time you reload.

6 Haste: Accelerate and surprise your enemies

Haste will provide an even increase to your movement speed, which is incredibly valuable for dodging the eldritch hordes in 10 Minutes Till Dawn. Especially when things heat up towards the end of your run and you find yourself weaving between dozens of enemies to stay alive, while maintaining your damage.

Investing more in this upgrade tree will grant you other abilities like Run and Gun, allowing you to move faster while shooting, or In The Wind, which will give you bonus damage the longer you can avoid damage . If you value the mobility of your shooters, this upgrade path is well worth your time.

5 Rapid Fire: Turn any weapon into a Machine Gun

Offering a 25% increase to your rate of fire, Rapid Fire is a great early game option for any weapon except the crossbow. Faster shots mean more damage, giving you a head start on the waves of enemies that come your way.

Rapid Fire also interacts well with elemental upgrades. This is especially true for Lightning, which fires automatically after a certain number of shots. The combination of these two will turn you into an electric storm that clears the screen, absolutely demolishing your enemies with a constant barrage of electricity.

4 Holy Shield: Keep enemies off your back

Holy Shield will create a bubble around your character that absorbs a hit and knocks enemies back to give you a chance to recover. It also automatically regenerates every two minutes, making it great for longer runs provided you can stay alive long enough without it.

A full upgrade will provide additional benefits while your shield is up, such as increased movement speed and fire rate, or random lightning strikes around the screen. What’s more, you can even halve this regeneration period, meaning you’ll be able to access this trusty barrier just one minute after being hit.

3 Light bullets: eliminate your enemies at the speed of light

Light bullets will provide a boost to projectile speed, making them a natural choice for builds involving Rapid Fire and Quick Hands. Since you and your enemies will likely be in constant motion, reducing the time it takes for your projectiles to reach their destination is a game-changer, especially on slower weapons like the Flame Cannon.

Light bullets will also provide a nice bonus in the form of an extra shot added to your max capacity, meaning you can shoot non-stop for a bit longer. Paired with the Shotgun or Crossbow, this is a significant increase over the default clip size, and can go a long way in unlocking the full potential of these weapons.

2 Power Shot: deadlier shots that keep enemies at arm’s length

Providing a buff to your bullet damage and adding more knockback to shots that hit enemies, this upgrade is essential for crowd control. While Power Shot is handy on weapons like the revolver or crossbow, it really shines when using the shotgun as you’ll be able to smash your way through your enemies and clear space for movement. more free.

It’s also worth noting that Power Shot will unlock Splinter as another upgrade option, a passive ability that turns enemies into pinata balls on death. There are few things more satisfying than the chain reaction that occurs after killing an enemy and watching them explode in a deadly cascade of bullets that decimates all around them.

1 Double hit: Spread love (or bullets)

This upgrade does exactly what it says on the label, doubling the number of bullets with each shot at the cost of a slight reduction in overall damage. Although initially powerful, by the end of your run the number of bullets you’ll fire will border on the absurd.

Not only can Double Shot be upgraded to Fusillade, quadrupling your initial production instead, but you can also invest in one of the cursed tomes dropped by the second boss, increasing your spread even further. Pair that with Rapid Fire and a handful of your clip-size buffs, and you’ve got a veritable bullet pipe in your hands – one that will shred enemies before they even have a chance to get close. .
