MARTA seeks feedback on exterior graphic design of new rail cars – Decaturish
Atlanta, Georgia – MARTA is seeking community feedback on a new generation of railcars that will leverage new technology and advance safety and security.

MARTA is investing $ 646 million in new rail cars to ensure the agency is ready to meet the future transportation needs of the Atlanta metro. The company will eventually replace all of MARTA’s existing wagons, according to the press release.
In 2019, MARTA’s board of directors approved the $ 646 million agreement with Stadler Rail for the purchase of new railcars, which is a significant milestone in MARTA’s capital improvement program. There are eight options to choose from for the new design. The minimalist options are straightforward and feature MARTA’s primary colors in a transparent stripe running the length of the mid-section of the train and across the forward and aft cabins.
The second minimalist option differs slightly, with the strip running along the bottom edge of the train.
The flowing ribbon options feature a banner that unfurls like the wind and uses the colors of the MARTA logo which extends prominently along the train and across the forward and aft cabins.
The second option of flowing ribbons displays a scaled-down version of the unfurled banner that runs along the mid-section of the wagon, “creating a feeling of movement, speed and excitement,” according to the MARTA website.
Another category is that of neighborhoods, also with two models. The first design shows overlapping ovals of different colors that run the length of the wagon from floor to ceiling “to represent the deep interconnections between the various communities served by MARTA,” the website says.
The second pattern features colorful ovals that resemble a string of beads along the middle section of the wagon. The design represents “the connection between people, places and spaces of the Atlanta metro,” according to the MARTA website.
The last category is that of tracks. One design displays large geometric shapes with bold white lines covering the sides of the cars, vividly reminiscent of railroad tracks.
The second track design is a series of bold colored lines that extend at varying angles and intersect along the length of the wagon and is an abstract interpretation of the tracks.
