The Pokemon x Converse Japan Sneaker Collaboration Is Beautiful

Pokemon and Converse Japan have announced a collaboration that will see the release of four pairs of Chuck Taylors, each – appropriately, considering the shoe in question – paying colorful homage to the series’ early roots.

There’s no garish branding or big graphic prints here, just four pairs of shoes in four different, iconic (for the franchise) colors, featuring four of the most classic Pokémon: Pikachu, Eevee, Charizard, and Mewtwo. Aside from the color palettes, the only things that give them like Pokemon shoes is a small Pokemon pixel art on the tongue and a small bio graphic near the heel, showing that particular character’s name, height, weight and number.

Each shoe will also come with a special Poké Ball tag (the little plastic tags you’ll find attached to the laces of some shoes, like Jordans), with sneaker freaker saying that Pikachu gets a normal one, Eevee (or Eievui here, since they’re Japanese sneakers) a Great Ball, Charizard (aka Lizardon on these) an Ultra Ball while Mewtwo gets a Master Ball.

If you haven’t been following this stuff, Pokémon likes to mix up its license when it comes to sneaker collaborations. We wrote about a very tasteful outing with Fila a few years ago, when 2019’s Adidas line was one of the best video game sneaker ties of all timeso good that I ended up buying my child many pairs of it.
This drop is expected to occur in Japan later this month, with prices hovering around the retail mark of the fancier Chuck Taylors ($75). Since the script was written specifically for the Japanese market and there was no accompanying announcement for a Western release, I wouldn’t hold your breath if you were looking for a way to get hold of one that did not involve paying resale.
