TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge – Behind the Scenes Dev Diary Episode 1
There’s a lot to be said for the resurgence of retro games. Especially anything from the arcade era of team-based beat-em-up games full of fluid pixel art and 8-bit soundtracks pushes the nostalgia button. Thank goodness Tribute Games accepted the pitch from Jean-François Major and Cyrille Imbert of Dotemu. They gave us an inside look at baseball with a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the game to come. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. In case you were wondering; yes, it’s a side-scrolling beat-em-up similar to Scott Pilgrim, streets of angeror even the 1991 TMNT: Turtles in Time.
Since the game isn’t finished yet, we’ll just have to take a look at the behind-the-scenes video. In it, Tribute Games co-founder Jean-Francois Major and Dotemu CEO Cyrille Imbert discuss their dream of working on a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. The two parties have teamed up to navigate years of discussions to secure the rights to a new release based on the timeless 1987 Turtles designs. Fans can learn how The Shredder’s RevengeWe have moved from a multi-decade vision to reality.
Contributing to a universe as legendary as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is an incredible opportunity on every level, but even after wrapping up a TMNT project years ago, I still held out hope for creating an experience that takes place in the time that amazed me so much as a child. We’ve finally found a partner who shares Tribute Games’ passion for ninja turtles. To have the opportunity to carry on the legacy of the classic TMNT beat ’em alls that fans around the world have grown up with is surreal.

It turns out that Tribute and DotEmu were separately working on locations for a new TMNT brawler in the style of Konami’s legendary entries in the genre. DotEmu (which publishes The Shredder’s Revenge) is driving the revival of streets of anger and WindJammers, so this arcade return fits perfectly into its wheelhouse. When Nickelodeon revealed that the two companies were actively launching a new retro revival, the two entities met and decided to team up to bring the game to life.
TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge lets fans smash their way through beautiful pixel art environments and slay tons of hellish enemies with your favorite turtle, each with their own unique skills and moves – making every run unique! Choose a fighter, use drastic combos to defeat your opponents, and experience intense battles loaded with jaw-dropping action and outrageous ninja abilities. Stay vigilant as you take on Shredder and his loyal Foot Clan alone, or grab your best friends and play with up to four players simultaneously!

As for why the game goes back to the origins of the franchise, Major said it only makes sense. Not only is this the version of the franchise the developers grew up with, but it’s also the one that was associated with this type of arcade show. “I feel like TMNT games were really at their peak in the 90s arcade era, so it made sense to go back to the roots,” Major said.
The first episode of the Developer Diary talks more about those 80s and 90s inspirations and even features an idle animation where Donatello pulls out a Game Boy and starts playing it.
